The Berner-Garde Foundation was established to develop, maintain and disseminate information about genetic diseases observed in the Bernese Mountain Dog. Berner-Garde is an OPEN, breed specific computer database. The Berner-Garde database contains information, which has been compiled over many years from voluntary submissions of owners and from other public sources of information. The information in the Berner-Garde database is available upon request, to BMD owners and clubs, both national and international, to veterinarians, to approved researchers and to other appropriate users who are working to reduce genetic disease in the BMD.

This site presents the Berner-Garde database in the form of a geneological browser including registry information and pictures where available.

Not a collection of static pedigree pages, the site is instead a dynamic viewer that allows you to traverse a large database of dogs, moving up, down, and sideways (that is, to ancestors, descendants, and siblings) at will. You move by clicking on any dog that's in the currently displayed pedigree or table of siblings or descendants. This lets you move through the generations in a very natural way. Several options are available for how pedigrees are displayed.

This site was developed using the interactive Mathematica Notebook developement environment, and deployed using the webMathematica appliction server. The pages you will see are generated dynamically by a Mathematica language program, which is accessing a database of about 19,000 dog records stored as a Mathematica file.

Everything to do with appearance of the pages is under the control of the Mathematica program (that is, there are no perl scripts or other such tools being used). In this particular site, the dog database is run entirely within Mathematica. For situations requiring a significantly larger database, or one that is being dynamically updated by local or network database entry tools, the system would instead be configured to read records from an underlying database system. The entire logic of the site would remain in Mathematica language.

This site allows you to browse a database of 19,000 Bernese Mountain Dogs. The database of dogs was kindly provided by the Berner-Garde Foundation Inc. A full pedigree for any dog in the database is available for viewing.  Because this site displays such a large number of pedigrees, you can roam around the whole breed and see how different kennels are related. It's fun to see if you can get from one dog you know to another: Any two Berners are almost certainly related somehow, and this database is large enough that you have good chance of finding the connection, if you know your dogs!

WARNING! Please note, as with any database, this one is sure to contain errors and omissions.  Please try to be forgiving of such errors, and just enjoy the ability to navigate from one dog to the next. As the file manager and site operators continue to edit and convert data, the site will be updated frequently.   It is possible you will notice missing dogs in the pedigree.  These dogs are probably in fact in the database but due to the conversion additional records must be completed before the sire and dam will be displayed in the pedigree.  Please check back often.

There are many missing whelping dates in our database.  If you notice a missing date for your dog, please forward that information along with your dog's name, sire and dam to the File Manager.  Thank you.

If you should find errors, send corrected information  to the Berner-Garde Foundation File Manager:
