The Finnish Spitz Geneological Site |
||
| The website
you are about to enter is a live,
interactive whole-breed geneological browser for the Finnish Spitz |
|
| Not a collection of static pedigree
pages, the site is in fact a dynamic viewer that allows you to traverse
a large database of dogs, moving up, down, and sideways (that is, to ancestors,
descendants, and siblings) at will. You move just by clicking on any dog
that's in the currently displayed pedigree or table of siblings or descendants.
This lets you move through the generations in a very natural way. Several
options are available for how pedigrees are displayed.
After reading the appropriate section below, click the "Instructions" button in the top right corner of this page. |

| This site was developed using the interactive Mathematica
Notebook developement environment, and deployed using the webMathematica
appliction server. The pages you will see are generated dynamically by
a Mathematica language program, which is accessing a database of
about 2,400 dog records stored as a Mathematica file.
Everything to do with appearance of the pages is under the control of the Mathematica program (that is, there are no perl scripts or other such tools being used). In this particular site, the dog database is run entirely within Mathematica. For situations requiring a significantly larger database, or one that is being dynamically updated by local or network database entry tools, the system could instead be configured to read records from an underlying database system. The entire logic of the site would remain in Mathematica language. |
The Finnish Spitz, which is the national dog of Finland and is also
known as the barking bird dog, has been used for centuries to hunt birds
and other small game. It does this by leaving the hunter's side, trailing
the game, and barking to notify the hunter of the game's whereabouts.
It is a handsome, lively breed which is very intelligent but also very
affectionate with a sense of humor.
This database contains over 2,400 Finnish Spitz that were registered in North American, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. This database was started in an effort to collect medical information so that genetic diseases could be traced and eliminated from our lines. The first step of this project is manifested here - a worldwide pedigree going back three decades. It has been compiled largely through volunteer efforts, many of these people collecting pedigrees for their own knowledge who later decided to share that information with the public. These volunteers should be lauded for their efforts which resulted in such a large database. We hope that this is a growing database, specifically, that we will
continue to add to it and monitor it. Additionally, because of the
nature of this project, the database might contain errors, such as spelling/typographic
errors, incorrect sire/dam or wrong gender, as well as missing information.
If you see any information that is incorrect or
